Cell: The Unit of Life Class 11 Notes (NCERT + Cell Theory + MCQ + NEET PYQ)

Introduction to Cell Biology

This chapter explains the fundamental unit of life, including cell structure, discovery of cell, and cell theory for Class 11 and NEET preparation.

Every living organism, whether simple like bacteria or complex like a human being, is composed of microscopic units called Cells. The cell is the fundamental structural and functional unit of all living organisms.

Unicellular Organisms

Organisms made of a single cell (e.g., Amoeba, Bacteria). They are capable of independent existence.

Multicellular Organisms

Organisms made of many cells (e.g., Plants, Animals).

Discovery of Cell

Robert Hooke (1665)

First observed "cells" in a piece of cork.

Robert Hooke discovered cell in cork diagram

Anton Von Leeuwenhoek

First saw and described a live cell.

Robert Brown

Discovered the Nucleus in the cell.

Robert Brown discovered nucleus

Cell Theory

The Cell Theory was a major turning point in biology. It was formulated by two scientists:

Matthias Schleiden (1838)

A German botanist who observed that all plants are composed of different kinds of cells.

Matthias Schleiden cell theory scientist

Theodore Schwann (1839)

A zoologist who concluded that animal cells are composed of cells and described the plasma membrane.

Theodore Schwann cell theory scientist

Modern Cell Theory

Rudolf Virchow (1855)

Proposed that all cells arise from pre-existing cells (Omnis cellula-e cellula).

  • All living organisms are composed of cells and their products.
  • All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
